** My Favorite Sweater ** by wildaboutbirds for Maddie and my characters Mariah, Katie, Cassie, and Little Maddie, and Tim Polmear's Maddie Petite (Only the dynamic sweater fits toddler-sized Little Maddie) Resources Used: QuickSuit by Thip -- freeware mesh resource Knittings by Karanta KMW Treasures III by KandaceWright Cin-Denim by Cin- (the source for the buttonhole textures) Thank you for buying My Favorite Sweater! Please write to me at wildaboutbirds1216@lycos.com if you have any questions or comments, and I will do my best to listen and help. INSTALLATION: Unzip to your main Poser runtime folder. FINDING THE FILES: Conforming Sweater and Buttons: Figures > MyFavSweater Prop Sweater and Buttons: Props > MyFavSweater MAT poses: (Conforming) Poses > MyFavSweater (Dynamic) Poses > MyFavSw_DYN Materials for Buttons: Materials > MyFavSweater USING THE CONFORMING SWEATER: Load Maddie. Load My Favorite Sweater, then in Figures choose "Conform To" and select Maddie 3 (or other Maddie character). All morphs have been made into FBMs for ease of use. You can access them from the Body of the sweater. To fit a character, change the morph on the sweater that has the character's name to 1.0. Now load MyFavSw_Buttons, the conforming button figure, and conform it to Maddie also. Notice that it has full body morphs that match the ones on the Sweater. Set the dials to match the sweater. If your Maddie is one of my other characters for Maddie, then after conforming, go to the Body of the Sweater and turn that character's dial to 1.0. If you have Katie, turn the Body Scale to 138%, and if you have Cassie change the Body Scale to 75%. The sweater should fit perfectly now. (Emily and Rachel need no adjustment, since they have the default Maddie body.) Notice in particular the morphs for fitting over clothing. You can adjust either the whole sweater, the torso only, or the bottom part only (below the waistline). Using a combination of these morphs, you can make My Favorite Sweater fit over most other clothing, as long as any bulky parts can be made invisible. FIXING POKE-THROUGH: There are a few little problem areas, so I have provided fix morph dials to take care of them. They are under the armpits when the arms are bent down (especially in back) and the points of the elbows when the forearms are bent more than 50-60 degrees. Use the appropriate morph dials on the Body to fix them. RENDERING: Go to Rendering Options and put in the following settings. These settings are based on Poser 5, but later versions have similar options. Check "use displacement maps" minimum displacement bounds 0.5 minimum shading rate 0.5 maximum texture resolution 4096 Using these settings will allow the textures and displacement maps to display properly and in their full glory. :) USING THE DYNAMIC SWEATER: Load the Maddie figure (in Figures\DAZ People) and clothing ("MyFavSweater_DYN" or "MyFavSw_LilMaddie" in Props > MyFavSweater). At the very bottom of your Poser screen there is an animation slider, a little pointer that goes from 1 to 30. Type 60 in place of the 30, so that there will be 60 frames by default. Put the slider on frame 1, select the figure, go to the Figure Menu, and under Use Inverse Kinematics, un-check both legs. Go to the Window menu, choose Joint Editor, and click the Zero Figure button. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you zero the figure and turn off IK to make the clothing fit and simulate correctly. In Frame 1, load your character morphs (if any) and change the morph dials on the Sweater to match. The sweater should fit the zeroed character perfectly, without any poke-through. Adjust the dials so that this is true. Move the frame slider on the bottom of the screen to frame 10, and load your pose. You may also want to adjust the character's position to give enough distance from the ground or furniture -- leave just a little space between them so the cloth can fit in. Look carefully at frames 1 through 10 to make sure that body parts do not pass through the clothing as they move to their posed locations. If they do, move them out of the way in frame 5 and they will go around the clothing to reach their final position by frame 10. Now click on the Cloth tab at the top of your screen to go to the Cloth Room. Click the button, "New Simulation." Change the End Frame from 30 to 60, as you did on the frame slider. Check the box marked "Cloth Collision." Click OK. Now click the Clothify button, and select your clothing item, in this case, "MyFavSweater_DYN" or "MyFavSw_LilMaddie." Click Clothify to OK your choice. Now click the button "Collide Against:" Click the Add/Remove button, then check all body parts and objects that you want to intersect with clothing. Look at the pose, and check only the parts that you need. If the sweater is worn over clothing, such as a dress, make sure the dress has been posed first, or if it is dynamic, run a simulation for the dress first. Then select the parts of the dress that will collide with the sweater. Set Collision Offset and Collision Depth to 0.3. You need to set these numbers for each object or figure that collides with the clothing. *** If you wish to leave the sweater buttoned, you can leave the Constrained Group as it is. If you want to partly or fully unbutton the sweater, you should edit the Constrained Group at this time. Read the notes **below** about the Constrained Group if you wish to do this. *** Now that everything is ready, RUN YOUR SIMULATION with the Calculate Simulation button, and sip a coffee or do some chores while it processes. The first few frames may take up to 5 minutes each, so DO NOT PANIC if Poser seems to be locked up. This is some high-resolution mesh, and it is necessary to get detailed, realistic folds. Just start the simulation and leave the machine, because it will take a while. The pose will be complete after only 10 frames, but the other 50 will let the cloth settle and drape properly. When the simulation is done, move the frame slider to 1 and zero ALL MORPHS on the sweater, using the Zero All Morphs pose in Poses > MyFavSw_DYN. Any dial that was posed during the simulation is incorporated into the simulation, and that is why the simulation may look all wrong when it finishes. Zeroing the dials should fix this. You will find your ideal cloth somewhere between frames 10 and 60. Move the slider back and forth and see which frame looks best. Add other elements to your scene and render! You can change material settings either before or after the simulation, using the MAT poses in Poses > MyFavSw_DYN. If you have poke-through at the hem where the cloth overlaps and the buttons attach, you can use the dials "adjust_back_edge_inward" and "adjust_front_edge_out" to fix it. (Do this after running the simulation and zeroing all other dials.) If you left the sweater "buttoned," you might be able to use the conforming buttons with the dynamic sweater, with perhaps a bit of adjustment using the "over clothing" morphs. Otherwise, you should load the prop buttons and pose them where they belong, by hand. This only takes a few minutes. Put the buttons just a little bit away from the cloth, to allow room for displacement when the cloth is rendered. ADVANCED TIPS: THE CONSTRAINED GROUP AND BUTTONING / UNBUTTONING THE DYNAMIC SWEATER The "constrained group" keeps the dress held together where it is supposed to be buttoned. By default, the vertices right where the 4 buttons are located are already selected to be in the Constrained group. With the sweater selected, click the button labeled "Edit Constrained Group." Now you will see everything in the scene turn black, and there will be a few vertices that have little red dots on them. These vertices are assigned to the Constrained group. This means that they will be held together, rather than moving with the rest of the cloth when the simulation is run. In the Group Editor box you can check the box "hide other objects" if the buttons or other items are in your way. When you are finished, make sure to un-check the Hide Other Objects box and close the Group Editor. HOW TO UNBUTTON THE SWEATER (AND HOW TO RE-BUTTON IT) Change the Document Display Style to "Wireframe." Click the "Edit Constrained Group" button in the cloth room. In the Group Editor, check the box marked "Hide Other Objects." Now you will see 4 clusters of red dots. If you wish to "unbutton" one or more of the buttons, hold down the Ctrl key and use the mouse to draw a box around those buttons. Just as the mouse will select vertices, Ctrl + mouse will un-select them. You can un-select either some of the button areas, or use the Remove All button in the Group Editor to unbutton all of them. If you unbutton most or all of the buttons, you may want to add the ring of vertices around the back and sides of the collar (neck opening) of the sweater. This will help prevent the sweater from falling off of the character's shoulders. If you have removed the constrained button areas and want to restore some or all of them, here is how you do it: Set the morph dials on the sweater so that the buttoned areas overlap. Change to Wireframe view mode and select Edit Constrained Group. Look at the sweater from the front. Hold your finger on the screen over one button at a time, and while your finger holds your place, click Hide Other Objects in the Group Editor. Now select the vertices where your finger is. Do this for all buttons you wish to restore. Finally, tilt the view angle so that you are looking down the back of the sweater, with other objects hidden. You will notice that the back of the sweater has areas that were accidentally selected. Use Ctrl + mouse to un-select them. PROP MORPHS FOR THE DYNAMIC SWEATER: Even if you don't want to use dynamic cloth, there are a few cute uses for the dynamic prop sweater, using the handy prop morphs. It can be "folded," "flat," "hanging on hook," or "laying on floor." So, Maddie can hang it on a hook at school, or leave it lying around at home, or Mom can fold it and leave it on her bed for her.
